chrystal ballOver the past two years, I have been reporting the looming threat that companies are beginning to experience now as the pressure for earnings is lifted during the post recession recovery. The threat is having very talented and fed up employees leave the workforce for greener pastures elsewhere.

Coupled with the requirements for life-style balance brought into the workforce by the younger generation, ethical leaders can no longer ignore the paradigm shift to collaborative work cultures offering life-style balance.  Over the past 5 years TIGERS certified organizational consultants have helped leaders make this shift with companies leaping forward to be recognized as excellent places to work so that talented fed up people streaming out of the workforce now have lucrative and exciting places to land.

According to Discover, which was recently recognized for it’s work flex solutions and healthy lifestyle programs their catcher’s mitt is on.

Discover recently ranked 16th on Glassdoor’s list of the “Top 25 Companies for Work-Life Balance,” which recognizes the credit given to the company by past and present employees for fostering professional development, creating an engaging work environment and promoting positive core values. Given that TIGERS recognizes companies with a palpable sense of trust, interdependence, genuineness. empathy, risk resolution and success-balanced work environments, comments like positive core values earnst a “high five” from us.

According to Jill Zimmerman, vice president of talent acquisition, development and diversity at Discover, “Discover’s top 25 ranking recognizes our investment in improving the lives of our employees both inside and outside of the workplace. This ranking is a further testament to Discover’s great work environment and committed employees.”The 2012 ranking, comprised of ratings on a five-point scale, reflects employees’ positive feedback surrounding Discover’s strong wellness programs, such as an on-site fitness center at the Riverwoods, Ill., location, flexible schedules, a generous vacation day policy and other benefits, and new learning opportunities.
“In today’s world of smartphones and laptops, striving for work-life balance can feel virtually impossible given the connection to our jobs around the clock,” said Rusty Rueff, Glassdoor career and workplace expert. “Companies that make sincere efforts to recognize employees’ lives outside of the office will often see the payoff when it comes to recruiting and retaining top talent.”I echo Rusty’s comments. Since I travel frequently to certify new TIGERS organizational development consultants and work with client leaders,  I get an earful on Sunday night airport layovers from workers traveling on Sunday to service clients on Monday. They work over 60 hours a week because they are “salaried” and are expected to take more time away from their families on Sunday.Glassdoor.com, a free online social jobs and career community, determines the rankings entirely through employee feedback on working for the company over the past year.Discover also was recognized recently in the top 50 on Computerworld’s 2012 “Top 100 Best Places to Work in IT” list and as a “Training Top 125 Organization” by Training Magazine in 2013.Copyright 2013 TIGERS Success Series by Dianne CramptonAbout Dianne:
