Perseverance is a necessary for high functioning team dynamics. It is also an attribute that all businesses must possess to withstand shifting business climates. But businesses cannot persevere without their team members possessing perseverance, too.  By implementing strategic team building strategies that enhance perseverance, leaders can promote a healthy culture and create a persevering team. This is the type of team that is able to stick together during times of adversity, as well as grow and adapt during times of change.

Teambuilding traits that promote a healthy culture

The following four tips will help you kick start perseverence:

Set regular, attainable goals. It can be difficult to persevere when you never feel as if you are achieving goals. To combat this, leaders should help employees establish personal goals on a weekly basis.  Leaders can assign these goals, but it will prove more effective when team members set their own goals.

Leaders should also consider creating space for team members to share once goals are achieved.  Team meetings are excellent for this as well as creating an updated goal chart in the break room. By meeting small goals on a weekly basis, team members will feel more accomplished in their positions. They may also , feel more motivated to improve each week.

On top of the weekly goals, team members should also have long-term goals that they are working toward. Weekly goals could be related or unrelated. However, with good planning, weekly goals can contribute to the bigger picture in substantial ways.

Pay attention to the emotional work climate. The emotional climate is important to the work culture because workplaces are full of humans, who are emotional creatures by nature. Leaders can sabotage their team by ignoring the emotional climate. This means that leaders aren’t validating or are outright mocking their team members’ emotions. This leads to employee disengagement, which leads to lower productivity and an unwillingness to perform to the best of their abilities. This also starts the incivility in the workplace ball rolling which is a slippery slope. Instead, leaders should validate their team members’ feelings and concerns and work together to create solutions to problems.

Implement performance support tools. As leaders, you likely spend a great amount of time and effort on recruiting, hiring, onboarding and training new employees. However, an important element to team success is performance support tools. Performance support tools can vary, but these tools are essentially part of a system that is put in place to support team members once they are trained and in their positions. This ensures that training transfers to the improved skills and attitudes that are desired in the workplace.  Without good transference planning and support tools, employees can feel overwhelmed by the vast amount of information they receive. By implementing a system with performance support tools, team members will have access to the tools that they need to perform their core job responsibilities to the best of their abilities.

One training that covers this in depth is Avoid Three Serious Performance Management Mistakes That Cause Collaboration and Teamwork to Fail.  It is available as a recorded training so it can be accessed any time of the day or night.

Be transparent. Transparency is a necessary component for an organization to be successful. A transparent culture allows for several benefits, including the need for fewer managers, the ability to keep track of progress, more successful onboarding, improved trust and higher retention rates. These benefits occur because new team members are quickly able to see how the organization operates, how team members perform and the benefits of working with the organization. To encourage a transparent culture, leaders can choose to implement tracking software that team members use to report their progress and review the progress of others within the organization. This type of software allows all team members to understand the importance of their roles, as well as to work together to solve problems and create solutions.

A healthy working culture is important for an organization’s success, and with teambuilding awareness and strategies, leaders can learn how to create a persevering team that understands how to work together to solve problems. To help create this type of working environment, leaders may want to utilize a program such as the TIGERS Six Principles That Build High Performance Teams self-study program. This program helps leaders to improve their employee accountability and engagement levels, as well as to improve their business success though the application of the six common-sense principles of trust, interdependence, genuineness, empathy, risk and success to improve collaboration and cooperation in the workplace.
