(MBE), franchisor of <em>The <\/em><em>UPS<\/em><em> Store <\/em>network. The goal is to recruit and\/or hire as many as 75,000 military veterans and their family members by the end of 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative was announced earlier today at a U.S. Chamber of Commerce event attended by dozens of business executives and First Lady Michelle Obama as part of the Obama Administration\u2019s <em>Joining Forces Initiative<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Stuart Mathis, president of MBE and a member of the IFA Board of Directors, took part in Thursday\u2019s Washington, D.C.event while Tim Davis, vice president of operations for <em>The <\/em><em>UPS<\/em><em> Store<\/em> franchise network and a former U.S. Marine, announced the company\u2019s initiative at a local news conference at <em>The <\/em><em>UPS<\/em><em> Store<\/em> University at its corporate headquarters inSan Diego.<\/p>\n<p>Similar events were held by other franchisors inAtlanta, Houston, Jacksonville, Nashville, Tampa, Baltimore, ColoradoSprings, Fort Lauderdale and other cities.<\/p>\n<p>In outlining details of <em>The <\/em><em>UPS<\/em><em> Store<\/em> network\u2019s commitment, Davis said the franchise fee of $29,950 will be waived for up to 10 qualified veterans who are first-time franchisees wishing to open a new location. This increased financial incentive is valid for prospective franchisees who sign a letter of intent between Jan. 1, and June 30, 2012. After that time, qualified veterans who join <em>The <\/em><em>UPS<\/em><em> Store<\/em> will continue to receive the franchised network\u2019s standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theupsstore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">VetFran incentive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, <em>The <\/em><em>UPS<\/em><em> Store <\/em>franchise network announced a collaboration with a franchisee lending program created by <a href=\"http:\/\/cts.businesswire.com\/ct\/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.franchiseamericafinance.com%2F&amp;esheet=50065924&amp;lan=en-US&amp;anchor=Franchise+America+Finance%E2%84%A2%28FAF%29&amp;index=3&amp;md5=c10d09847593a94d9c3e2743dea74563\" target=\"_blank\">Franchise America Finance\u2122(FAF)<\/a> and The Bancorp Bank, a wholly owned subsidiary of <a href=\"http:\/\/cts.businesswire.com\/ct\/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thebancorp.com%2F&amp;esheet=50065924&amp;lan=en-US&amp;anchor=The+Bancorp%2C+Inc.&amp;index=4&amp;md5=19cbe57281e9f757ec95220fdfb4da7e\" target=\"_blank\">The Bancorp, Inc.<\/a> which included $15 million in available funding for the development of new locations.\u00a0 As part of \u201cOperation Enduring Opportunity,\u201d FAF will waive the packaging fee and The Bancorp Bank will credit the SBA guarantee fee for any of these 10 veterans who meet the necessary qualifications to gain access to this pool of money. This could provide approximately $3,500 in additional savings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are extremely proud of our franchisees, especially those who are military veterans,\u201dDavissaid. \u201cVeteran unemployment rates of 11.7 percent &#8212; 22 percent for veterans under 25 years-old &#8212; are undeserved among the men and women who have honorably served to help keep our nation free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2019Operation Enduring Opportunity\u2019 will help as many as 75,000 veterans and their family members find new career paths in franchising, provide them with great jobs and help boost our nation\u2019s economy,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd on behalf of <em>The <\/em><em>UPS<\/em><em> Store<\/em> franchisees nationwide, we\u2019re proud to play a role in this effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The franchise industry includes more than 825,000 franchise establishments that support nearly 18 million jobs. Veterans have a proven track record of success in franchising. According to a recent study based on U.S. Census data, there are more than 66,000 veteran-owned franchise establishments in theU.S., providing\u00a0 jobs for 815,000 Americans. More than 2,100 veterans have become franchise business owners through the IFA\u2019s VetFran program, originally established in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs tens of thousands of service men and women return from deployment inIraq, Afghanistan and Southwest Asia, expanded opportunities are needed to ensure veterans and their families are able to transition into the civilian economy.
